I have a stock 7.5 in my 1980 malibu and have a few questions about it as i'm wanting to to change the gear and put a posi in.

i know the axles are 26 spline and the pinion spline is 27 but i'm just curious as to the carries series so i can order the proper 3.73 ring and pinion for my carrier.

and since i'll be putting the posi in and changing the carrier do i match the existing carrier series?

So you're changing your gears and carrier? Your question starts off sounding like just the gears but then you mention changing the carrier thats why I ask. If so it doesnt matter what series your stock carrier is because it will be getting replaced. Just get a series 3 carrier when you get your gears.

sorry if it was confusing hahaha, its also because i'm toying with the idea of mini spool, but not sure if i'll be able to tolerate it lol

so long story short, i'm trying to figure out if the stock carrier is a series 3 or 2

Do you know your current gear ratio? 3.08 and lower is a series 2. 3.23 and higher is series 3.

Wouldnt surprise me in a gbody, mine had 2.29s  When you pull the cover check for the ratio before you order anything just to be certain.

I built my 7.5 rear for my wagon. I had 2.43 gears and brought 4.10 gears rebuilt kit From jegs. It came out great and works perfect. I wouldn't mess with any mini spools though. Good luck with your project.
