OK... I know some of you will say this is a unicorn and the car doesnt exist.

I say back in the archives that someone posted a few pics of one that had the Y97 RPO and people were giving him a rash that it had to be collision repaired blah blah blah, etc etc...

Now, Having owned a 2+2 Aero and watching it rot into the ground due to its piss poor assembly techniques (Who rivets cars together anyway? Especially a car that flexes as much as a G-body?? )

I parted this car out once it lived a 300K lifespan in Hawaii and the salt air did its worst to it. But thats not what this post is about...

I'm old enough to remember these cars new. Silver, sitting on the one Pontiac Dealer's floor. The fastbacks were UGLY... (no offence to those that like them.. they were hard to sell.) They painted one Flame red metallic (GTA color) gorgeous!, and another one BLACK!... (too bad they left the decals on!) Then, close to the end of the year, a silver coupe showed up on the lot. 2+ 2 nose, decals, blacked out around the door windows and 1/4 glass, and a body colored T/A styled wind on the trunk! The car was PERFECT! (Except I couldn't qualify to buy it because I had just bought an ElCamino!)

Nobody could tell me how the car came like this... since all 2+2's were supposed to be bubble glass cars. I had a feeling it was going to be rare.

So let me tell you the story... The car I say up until about 2014, when I changed jobs. It was still a daily driver. Other than the faded Silver paint, it was still immaculate.

Almost no one knows the car exists, except for one parts guy who worked at the dealer... and me. (And a few people who see it) Its so nondescript and normal looking people dont notice it.

So read this story, and the attachment from PHS, and you'll see how rare the car(s) there are a few apparently are.

I don't buy it.

That spoiler is off a firebird and although it was in the parts bin at the time, I don't think GM, even though the car was modified at a 3rd party company, would have installed it.

The owner says it was resprayed which would conveniently hide any repair work or a nose swap.

I wish I could put a magnet on the corners of the roof to see if it was bondo'ed up to form the corners after they were hammered down to match the window better.

The 1225 numbers always seemed arbitrary and records are poor so nobody really knows how many they really made from my understanding. They aren't numbered like GNX's. If they were short parts I'd be more apt to assume they just would have made 1224 or 1223 or something instead of using the noses to make some fixed, pre determined number.

I would more believe that this was a non GM sponsored build. AKA 1230 noses were built, there were a few left over, and the contract company modified this to 2+2 spec minus the rear window. Similar to what the white GNX-ray #548 car had done. Still period correct and "factory" built, but not factory "approved"

I remember reading an article that said that 2 rear window delete 2+2s were built for GM executives back in the day. There were photos with the article that showed one of these cars. Supposedly both of the window delete cars were painted maroon. From what I've heard and read, GM still has one of these cars in the Heritage Center museum in Detroit.

This might be one of them, sold at Mecum years ago: https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0113-143232/1985-pontiac-grand-prix-22/

Pretty cool even if you can't legally title/drive it on the road, I still would here and there.

I wouldn't be shocked if a few were made without the rear window, as people with 2+2's and Aerocoupes know, they were somewhat crudely put together and could be changed to a notchback. But I'd also be less shocked if something happened to the window and it was changed to a notchback later on, the one linked above.

My experience with GM cars going back to the 60's is that GM never released any vehicle that did not have a normal VIN and was a complete production style vehicle. This information was given to me by several friends who worked for GM; one that worked in engineering. The exceptions were the cars from the Heritage Collection that were sold off around the time of the bankruptcy. These cars were most likely sold with a liability waiver.
GM has release Pilot line cars which are typically pre production or very early production models that are produced to test assembly procedures or for show/display purposes. These cars will have very early build dates and very low serial sequence numbers. The Grand Prix in question being built in the 1980's would have a SPID label and other items documenting its build. The note that the ran out of parts is not normal. The car would not have been built if that was the case.
