So i searched some of the threads but didn't see if the hood scoop on the 82-84 Hurst Olds needed a reinforced hood or if it was just icing on the cake bolted down. I realize these are hard to find OEM items, (although we all know who here has a secret stash..lol). It looks like their is some aftermarket style out there but not sure of there quality because they don't have the reinforced backing strips. I'm trying to source one and realize wont be cheap I just would like it to be the correct piece. There's a lot of knowledge here so let me say thanks in advance....as usual.

The 83/84 H/O hood has some extra bracing near the rear of the hood. I had to have a different hood put on my 84 because the front leading edge of it had rusted from the inside and when the painters were sanding it, it blew holes in the front edge of the hood. So it was just easier to get another hood, although it wasn't an H/O hood. I haven't had any issues with it, though.

Here's a spare scoop I have that shows the underside of the scoop itself. 8 studs/nuts hold it to the hood. It's rather heavy for what it is, but not overly so. Not much in the way of bracing, though.

Thanks for that info. So the back of the scoop is open? But it’s not a functioning cowl air system. I’ll just have to keep my eyes open for one.

My 78’ 442 had on off a SS and had no problems. Was like that for 3 years before I sold it. I think the MCSS scoop is narrower than the one 69hurstolds has but I could be wrong. I also had a 2.2 Charger scoop on my 79’ Supreme for 8 years again no problem and both where stock non-braced hoods. I fact the 79’ hood had heat relief holes under the scoop about 2.5”-3” in size.

No. It's not open in the back. A support bridge, if you will, is molded into it closing off the back of it, although it is under a ledge. And here's a tidbit of info not many people are aware of- the 83 scoop was painted ALL black so everything was fine. But for 84, the scoop was silver, so they installed a decal (GM p/n 22525037, #25 in the pic below) over the back where the "opening" would be to simulate that it was open. Pretty cheesy. But it was what it was. Nobody I know of repros that decal, but I have an NOS decal I'm thinking about making a template from and can make one if needed.

DO NOT recommend opening the back of an original scoop unless you're crazy. It will just allow spiders, bugs, whatever, to get up in there and it's so narrow, you'd have to remove the scoop (endangering your hood paint) periodically to clean under it. No way your hand could fit up in there. Besides, it's so far away from the windshield I can't see how it could possibly be a plus if it were functional. Fake it 'til you make it.

Not I made the 2.2 one into what it was. Like 69hurstolds says it was a “for looks only” and totally agree that it is really not worth making it functional. There are ways to give yourself the cool/cold air. Look on here on Gbodyforum and you should find multiple styles that has been made or used. Cowl with a stock hood, duel snorkel, I believe someone makes a setup that is similar to the mid 60’s Chevelle that goes over the a/c-heater for the cowl air intake. With a stock style air filter cover and base. All comes down to can I ? And has it been made? Do/ can I custom make it.

Great information everyone I appreciate it and all the details and history I appreciate it. I’m going to be on the hunt for a oem scoop I have seen one that’s really expensive, just might have to pull the trigger on it because I know their not cheap.

Do some digging and you might find a scoop someone hid away. Or depending on where you live look for Olds meets. There is a good couple of them in the Carlisle Pa. Fair grounds every year. Or look in hemmings motor news, even better check with the sponsors on here and see if they have something or know someone.

I cant believe that companies sell the hood trim but no one reproduces the scoop itself. It would seem that would be a wanted part
