Has anybody been successful in keeping the paint from peeling on Olds exhaust ports??

I don't want this to happen if at all possible. Anybody have any tips, or a certain type of paint, that will keep it from peeling. I realize this is a "hot spot" on this casting, but it looks like crap.

Step one...

DO NOT start the engine. :)

Sorry man, I'm not sure what you can do to stop that from happening. If you could find some VHT or other kind of header paint to match, that's about the only thing I can think that would keep from eventually frying off of that area. If you're painting the engine black, then you should be able to find some heat paint fairly easy. If gold, well, that's a whole nother story. I used some Olds blue on the 455 in my 71 and it's darkened quite a bit in that area, but hasn't burnt all the way through yet. I used Supercars Unlimited paint. But that was about 1000 years ago. It may be one of those things you'll have to touch up from time to time.

Unless someone has come up with a great alternative.

If you use quality paint and it's clean/prepped right, it should hold up for a pretty good while. It appears that gold SBO in your pic hasn't been cared for that much. The black isn't noticeable as much as the gold or blue or even red colors. It should take just a few minutes to mask up and respray the discolored areas (do it before the rust sets in).

I don’t think that the rust is that bad of a match.

Maybe apply a few coats of at least a 1200 degree high heat paint and then spray your gold as a topcoat.

Paint it 400 bronze instead of gold. Perfect rust match.

I haven't tried it on iron heads, but I usually do the VHT high heat primer, Fusick color, then VHT clear.
