Has anyone ever shipped large body parts?

....and I don't mean human body parts :mrgreen:

Looking to ship a set of doors for a 78-80 Cutlass. They are large and heavy. I have no clue how to go about doing this as I have only shipped items as large as a dashboard. Do I still go through UPS or FedEx? The doors will need to be crated up in a wood crate.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I have used uship with mixed results. A lot of brokers on there. Find a local tucking company and call them. You'll need a zip for the delivery obviously, and size of crate. Also check for a trucking company near the recipient if they don't have a business address with a loading dock, that way they can pick it up there.
 
For larger items that your local ups or fedex won't take, you need to get a hold of a LTL(less than load), or hotshot trucking company. Hotshots are guys with a pickup & trailer that will haul about anything that will fit on the trailer. If you use a hotshot, make sure they have a USDOT number and at least $750,000 in liability insurance(the min. they are required to have). If they are a flyby night operation, and the DOT stops them and puts him out of service who knows when your parts will get delivered. you can also go here http://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/Default.aspx type in their dot number, and it will tell you if they are a good company or not. If they have a really high out of service rate, I would use a different company. Trucking is nothing like they show on shipping wars. You will usually have to strap them to a pallet, or crate them before you take them there. Cost depends on how heavy X how far you are going to ship them.
 
Most people don't know this but Greyhound bus ships things like this. I needed to ship a fender and the big two both called it over sized and wanted nearly $150, so i went greyhound and did it for $75. The draw backs are it takes a couple extra days because they put things on the bus when there is extra space and the person recieving has to go to the bus depot and pick them up. You will need to ship them in two seperate boxes as it may otherwise be to big, call and see.

Box the parts. You may have to spend a couple bucks for the boxes but double walled is the way to go. You can ship fed ex at that point. This is how we ship them.
Now on a set do freight. fed ex freight R & L etc..
But still put them in a box. Class 250 is expensive when shipping freight. It is sheet metal or body parts. Plus if they get damaged they do not pay. They pay price per poind for sheet metal.
Fedex will re-imburse but it does cost a lot shipping them in boxes.
freight the lower the class the cheaper it is. rear end housing for example is a class 65 or 85.
