Been off the internet lateley... getting ready to swap heads on my cutlass, and just wanted some input on gaskets. Sbc 350 .060 over, new heads are aluminum 64cc 2.02 1.60, unknown brand. Been a while since I messed with aluminum heads. I'll be using all be ARP bolts, and new valvetrain parts, just seeing what everybody recommends gasket wise. Thanks

Patriot had a decent cheap LS head but I don't think they are around anymore

I had used them in the past.

I used stock GM bolts and the Cometic gaskets.

On my big block I have FelPro

Any name brand you really can't go wrong with. Standard replacement gaskets. Make sure the bore of the gasket is slightly bigger than your 4.060 bore. And pay attention to the thickness, .020 is nearly .5 difference in compression. Unless you can get 93 octane, you really don't want anything over 10.25ish:1 on an all iron street motor/DD. But for aluminum heads with a good tune and a good cam you can do as high as 11.

What kind of finish does your block have? You need to have the right RA finish on the block or you probly won't be able to get the gaskets to seal up on the block side of the gasket.

If the finish is ok, then my vote is for Cometic gaskets as you can get them in just about any thickness you want or need.

FelPro 1003 or 1010 if the block is within .005" of zero deck. If the pistons are out of the hole .005-.010" GMP 12557236. If the pistons are .010-.020" in the hole then GMP 10105117. If more than .020" in the hole you could use a FelPro 1094 Shim gasket, but be advised that a steel shim between a steel block and aluminum head is not the best program - fretting develops over time and ends up leaking. It does take some time or extreme use, but generally it is not recommended.

Have to be careful about head gasket thickness. Even through a thicker gasket will lower CR, it will also make spark knock worse. While a thinner gasket will raise CR, it will also improve in cylinder mixing and reduce spark knock. Spark knock occurs in the lean spots of your cylinders from poor quench.
