I'm in the same boat. Originally it was a piece of sorry looking foam. Mine was shot and now I have nothing there since my heater core change.

Any piece of foam you can find will work. You are just going to have to cut to fit.

I've used seat cushion foam, those foam kneel pads they sell at swap meets, and most recently a foam sanding block.

I have always used pipe \ duct sealant. It looks like a block of black chewing gum. Electricians and plumbers use it to seal up pipes when they drill thru walls. It won't shrink, or rot. Sealing up the airbox will help the fan blow thru the vents better was well

You can use Just about anything to seal this opening. My suggestion is to go to an AC supply store and ask them for recommendations. When I restored my S-10 several years ago, I used 1.5 x 1/4" AC sealant tape to wrap the opening and tubes.

GM used some sh*tty open cell type foam for the heater tubes, and closed cell foam for the evaporator "seal". Most of the time, the glue holding in the foam around the lower evaporator tube usually would work loose and the fan air pressure would blow it up out of its seat in the housing.

I used closed cell foam that is used as seal for bottom of doors and garage doors. HD or Low..... has it in rolls.
