Heater Core question

I'm pretty sure that I am in need of a new heater core because as of recently my windshield fogs up when the heat is on and there is a sweet smell present. Before I buy one, I wanted to make sure that I get the right one.

The car does have the A/C and heater housing combine if that makes sense. A/C components are removed so it doesn't function anymore though.

Do I have to get a heater core that works with A/C because my car originally came with it or are heater cores that work w/o A/C the same size and same function?
