I have those same headers (#38310) on the 81 Malibu. I have to unbolt the header from the motor and the exhaust to replace or fix the factory starter.

Even with a small starter, it is really difficult getting it in and out with the header in place. But I did dimple the one tube to make clearance to let the one starter bolt drop all the way out.
This is reminding me why I sold my set of Elites to another member & went with the mid '70's manifolds this time around. Then there was the rot from daily driving in the winter with them...
I have the Hedman elite headers in my GP along with a mini starter that can be installed with the header in place....
With the starter problems I have with Hedman headers (68310)on the 81 Malibu, I went with Flowtech (31104FLT) on the 78 El Camino . I run the factory large starter with no problems.

I'm still using a large body starter with my old Blackjack headers. I've had to loosen the flanges the last time I had to replace the starter. If I ever need to replace it again, I would go with a GM truck mini starter. The clearance is also beneficial as far as minimizing heat soak. Fortunately, even with my larger starter, I never had a heat soak issue...nor did I ever need to install a heat shield of any kind.
I used flowtech headers with a big old style gm starter fit fine with my sbc. Didn't have to loosen the header any when removing or installing the starter. The best factory mini starter I've used is either for a Corvette or camaro with a lt1 engine from the mid 90's.
