What year motor? What cam and compression? I like a quick advance curve and a lot of vacuum advance on a low compression Olds V8.

In [ general terms ] yes . With just a little work there good until 6000 - 6500 . And beyond if you want to keep the HEI , i have always had good luck with them.

its a 1971 455 bore .30 over, not sure of compression i would think at lease 9.1, new stock piston, hp valve job. edelbrock cam ,intake manifold and 750 carb combo . w/z exhaust manifold or in the mail. nothing big

Sounds like the HEI will fit the bill just fine. I used the HEI that came out of my 260ci Olds with 90K in a rebuilt 350 Olds V8 for years without a hitch. And plan to continue using it as is when it sees the road again. Been very reliable with a stock coil even when I wound the engine up to the 5500rpm redline.

They are usually pretty good but I have had a few have pick up coils die out of the blue. Remember GM HEI's are now 40 years old. Actually the new Chinese HEI's are nicely machined. I upgrade the coil and module on any HEI I buy or use.

It all depends what you want for timing. Most Olds HEI have around 20 base timing with 36 total timing. What those weights and springs put out is hard to say.

so after reading a couple articular on hei it seem the spark plug gap needs to be taken into account. with that said does anyone know if the stock gap for ac sparks plug for the 71 455 will stay the same.
