HELP!! can't wire in my coil

i have a 87 monte SS well and truly FUBARed, electrically, by the previous owner. i dropped a 383 into it, but for now i plan on using the stock computer setup and feedback carb. i have a magnetic triggered distributor and a seperate coil. there are two plugs on the coil, one goe to the distributor. the other one goes god only knows where! i know 1 wire is power, but i can't figure out the other (white) wire. logically i assumed it was ground, but when i tried that, the coil burned and melted. i have tried alldata and mitchell for wiring diagrams but to no avail. if anybody has any idea please let me know.

One is power, the other goes to the trigger on the distributor.

there are 4 total connections. 2 go through a jumper wire to the distributer. the other 2, one pink (i believe it is power) and the other, white which is the wire in question.

It could be the tach wire then.
