just picked up a 84 cutlass with a 350 sbc motor,
was driving home and notced motor getting warm and running 230 on highway then it would just climb at idle to almost 280

got home and changed thermostat and temp sensor which did no good, changed oil and filter
then noticed im getting oil in my coolant
what is causing this?

head gasket...
... sorry for the bad news :?

Yep definitely head gasket. The head gaskets are the only gaskets and seals on my entire engine that don't leak thankfully (badly at least, the blow by takes care of it for me instead), but I've seen oil floating in the radiator many times and it's 99% always head gasket.

oil from a head gasket?Only coolant runs in a head gasket at 15psi or so is the oil in the coolant or is coolant in the oil.

tis a head gasket 🙁 😢

Any chance it's transmission fliud? Could be the transmission cooller inside the radiator leaking.

oh jeez, I didn't think of that :blam:

I found trans fluid in my coolant after I put a new radiator in my car. I had bought a faulty "new" radiator. Then I had to buy and install another one.

Watch that too, because if the trans fluid is mixing with the coolant, then the trans fluid is not returning back to the transmission and could overheat. Be careful.
