I am getting a 84 or 86 hes not sure of year off a buddy of mine i wanted to kno if those years came with computers in them this is my first cutlass I am putting in a bbc sorry all you olds guys so i just wanted to make sure this isn't going to be a project as far as wiring goes thanks for the help.

84 and 86 both had computers in them. Not sure exactly what the first computerized year was. All the wiring for the computer is seperate from the rest of the car. The computer itself is behind the passenger side kick panel. The wiring then goes thru the firewall into the engine compartment on the pass side at the lower corner. Unless you're removing the pass fender, it might just be easier to bundle it up and store it underhood. There's a small bracket and rubber grommet that seals the wires entering the pass compartment and the wires are hard to pull these thru from the engine side. Also, it's kinda hard to reach up there from the bottom with the fender still on.

All the wires for the normal functions such as starter, alt, gauges, and such come thru the firewall connector on the drivers side.

You can kinda-sorta see the bracket in this pic under the a/c box. I've already removed the wiring in this pic.

I *bastardized* mine, too. See my sig  I'm running a SBC (gasp!) EFI 383.

Now im going carb am i going to have to bypass computer to start car or will i be able to just hook my starter, alt, and dist up and fire it up

since 1981 all v6 and v8 cutlasses were computer controlled. Just rip it out and ditch it.

ya toss the computer harness. as long as the carb and dist arent computer controlled your fine.

My computers in my basement and the car runs fine.

1983 hurst olds were all computer controlled.........my friend has one. the 83 hurst olds were infamous for having a ton a computer glitches. my friend is a liscenced mechanic, when he got his he spent almost two summers diagonosing and replacing o2 sensors, as well as several other problems. the computer seemed to run him in circles giving the same codes. finally tweeked it as best he could. I believe thats the reason a lot of 1983 hursts owners do engine swaps. up here in canada its almost impossible to buy an all original hurst, al have non numbers matching engines. my friend has actually researched this to some extent...........83 was a bad computer year. he is always keeping an eye out for an 1985 442 computer to try.
don't know what year they started the computer control stuff, but in 83 the were still getting the bugs out. i believe this had to do with the upgraded HP and performance package

just a side note............ i have two 1985 cutlass salons, which is the car they used to upgrade to a 442 in 1985, and neither one has computer control, not even the kick panel opening

peace

thanks for the help one more question the fuel line is on the cutlass is on driver side right? and with the car aldready having a small block in it can i use the same mount location for my big block or will i have to adjust them too? I kno us chevy guys are pain in the asses lol

I personally dont think Chevy/Olds guys are PITA's but that/s just me. I'll admit, I'm just a bit biased though!

SBC mounts are used also for the BBC. If your fuel line is in good condition except for being on the wrong side, just splice into it and extend it to the pass side. But, make sure it's in good condition. When I did my TPI swap I used my old main line as my return. I used a 4.3 Monte sending unit and moved the *main/return* line to the return on the sending unit and ran a new 3/8" main. Long story short, I couldn't get my fuel pressure below 100#. Replaced my old main/return lina and press instantly dropped to the required 45#. After I got the old line out, it was plugged beyond belief! I don't know if running the small amount of return fuel the opposite direction in the old main did it or not. My V6 (seemed to) run fine with the old line ... :wtf:

Moral of the story? ... with a hungry big block, it might be worth the extra time and effort to replace the line anyway. We know what happens when engines run lean :puke:

ok kool thanks alot for the help ill keep my progress posted
