Me and a guy have been at this for weeks. 1980 Pontiac. There is a two wire connector that clips onto the washer part of the wiper motor assembly. One wire is white and is ignition switched hot. The other is pink and is a ground for the "WASH" button on the dash/column. He says it MUST be connected properly or it will burn up. I say it is a simple solenoid and it doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal. Neither of us wants to risk burning up an expensive assembly just to prove a point.

There are two ways to settle it.

Hook it up if you are so positive it will work your way.

Or .........

If you hook it up backwards wont it work the opposite way

HA HA! It's almost come to that. If it was my car I would just do it because I have a milk crate full of wiper motors. He is a nervous nelly about everything. The connector is missing and instead the wires have crimped-on spade connectors. He didn't write down which way the wires went on and is afraid to hook it up wrong. I say that according to the schematic in the manual it is only a solenoid that releases the ratchet allowing the pump to pump as the wiper makes one revolution. A solenoid is merely a wound wire electromagnet with an iron plunger that moves to operate something. It doesn't care which way the current flows. So unless there is something else involved that requires correct polarity I say it doesn't matter which way the wires are put on.

get the dueling pistols and tell nervous nelly that he needs to pack the powder perfectly or the gun will explode

SETTLED!! He was whining so much I was ready to bash his face so I just went and reversed the &*%$#@ wires. Of course they worked fine! It's a friggin' solenoid. I even switched them back and forth several times right in front of him while he worked the wipers control. They worked great both ways. Then I told him to take his cry-baby-mobile and put it away for the Winter. SHEEEESH!
