I'm looking for a radiator that mounts utilizing the factory retainers/mounts and can handle much more than stock HP for a 1/4 mile run. Inquiring for my own car and another car that I'm putting together.

I'm using the cheapest option that I could find, Advanced Auto $80 with discount code single row, and it works great on the street with a 4.8/5.3 combo. At the strip it will make it through the 1/8th without issue, less than 215, but the 2nd 1/8th it will get to 235-238. 230's don't bother me, but it will get turned up soon which I assume will turn up the temps. My son's Cutty with a 421 has been running an Allstar Performance triple pass that is a dual 1" core. It works fabulously and is relatively economical but it won't fit into the mounts because it's a little too tall and the lower hose attachment has to be cut and welded to clear the frame. The Allstar is a good option other than the modifications that are needed.

I'm looking for something that will work that's a direct bolt in. I was looking at the Champion stuff CC162, but I read that they might be overrated. Anyone have any experience with the Champions or with anything else that has worked?

p.s. - I'm not will to drop $500 for a radiator. If it turns to that, then I'll run the Allstar Performance units and have to live with the needed modifications.

The Champion 3 core wasn't big enough for me, with my 8 to 1 403, 195 to 215, 230+ towing probably not for you. A guy on here had the 4 core with a 10 to 1 403, didn't get above 195. It is very wide compared to the 3 core.

I'm running the Champion dual pass unit. It fits in the mounts, using the stock V8 top plate, and have yet to see my 5.3 get over 210 on a hot summer day. The model I have is CC162DP.

I have the standard CC162 in my 86' Regal and it fit without modifications and keeps my 355 SBC at 180 all day, apparently the only thing it won't cool is a 8-1 403 Olds.
I also have a new clutch fan and 6 blade fan with aluminum blades but will eventually switch to the Intrepid fan set up that I have.

Scott - I can't use a dual pass due to the location of the turbos - the upper hose interferes.

======
565bbchevy - now the debate of the 3 or 4 core with small tubes vs double 1" tube core. Do you daily drive your Regal only?

Olds307 - what did you end up using in your 8:1 403?

The Regal's 355 is only about a 350 horse engine so no it won't be raced, just a fun cruiser I would drive it when it was nice out and I also drove it two weeks straight to get to work and back and running around etc. in the summer when I blew the trans in my daily driver.
I like big tubes in aluminum radiators and have a Griffen with 2 x 1.25" tubes in my Monte but it is wider and taller and didn't fit without some mods but does a great job at cooling my 565 BBC on the street but I also overkill everything on that car.

That makes sense of the clearance issue. It's the same rad as the CC162, just setup for LS inlet/outlet. I'm sure there are some higher HP cars running them with success.

I have the griffin 8-00010-LS 19*31 (ish) dual pass.

I had to modify the lower supports and build new uppers. I was kinda stuck with finding a dual pass so your non dual pass option opens things up a lot.

It keeps my 6.0 cool, ac on, at the track, in traffic or on the street. Only issues I have had with overheating is on drag weekend is if I'm on 4+hr drives my fuse block would get got and trip my circuit breaker in my electric fan and shut off. If the there isn't airflow driving through a town slow it overheats but if the fan is on it stays cool.

Whatever size the griffin I have is about as big as works. Width and height.

Apparently, maybe my 403 was the issue. Exactly why after humming and hawing, I'm not building it. I actually had a 2 core rad with 1" tubes that was a touch too wide that cooled better. I currently have an A body 1 core aluminum plastic rad in the 88. I would personally try the Champion 2 core with 1" tubes, the whole point of an aluminum rad, wider cores for less air flow restriction. I agree, better places I can spend $500.
