Hints on how to re-texture chalky plastics?

anybody ever had success replacing the simulated vinyl texture in places where the plastics have going chalky? Yes, I'll be dying them black using SEM but I'd like to re-texture before spraying on the new colour.....

HAFROD used several layers of bed liner and a toilet roller (damned phone) to fix some plastic Elco panels, then dyed to match.

Watching this thread to see what better options emerge.

SEM sells the texture in a rattle can. Spray it on spray correct color over it.

Sand the texture off, reflock it, sand it again to knock the peaks of the new flocking off.
