I have the chance to get a 850 for a decent price. Car currently has a 600cfm edel. Previous owner had a 750cfm on it before he sold it. He said it ran really strong with it. He said the car would throw you back into the seat..but I'm not feeling that power with the 600..... So would jumping to an 850 be too much? Built 403 olds motor with mild cam and is estimated around 400hp and 475 tq. Manifold is Edelbrock Rpm performer

It appears to be a Proform carb which is a Holley design, if you are getting a deal on it and you don't need a choke for cold weather starts it could be made to work.
Since it is basically a race carb you have full adjustability to tune it by changing jetting and air bleeds and the billet metering blocks should have adjustable emulsions, idle feed restrictions and power valve restrictions

As 565 said, you can get it to work. When tuned it will definitely outrun the Edelbrock, but don't expect to just slap it on and have it "put you in the seat".
What needs to be done when doing the carb swap?

...............unfortunately....thats how it is. Should I trim it so the slack is gone?
If the Edelbrock is staying on there then I would look for a throttle bracket that is adjustable so you can pull it back to take the slack out and get full throttle opening.

I would like to put a bigger carb on...but maybe I should look into that bracket just in case
