It looks like I am doing a water pump on a Honda D16Y8 (97 Civic SOHC VTEC) for a co worker tomorrow, and I need to know where to line the timing belt up to. Are there marks on the cam and crank sprockets that show you where to put the belt? I know there are some marks on a Mitsu 4G63, but I have never played with a Honda before (well... this part anyhow). Are there any special things to look out for that I need to know? Will channeling Soichiro's ghost help?

I think you should convince your co worker to sell their Honda and buy a cutlass... Then they won't have that problem, and they have a real car.

Yes there are things to worry about, the crank bolt is not a fun thing to get off off hondas, they have a metal key in them that seem to be a b*tch to get out sometimes. IF you can try and get a crank holder from a autoparts store as it sometimes will be very hard to come out, even with a impact gun. If its a manual, you can take the clutch shield off and hold the fly wheel with a screwdriver and it makes it much easier to get off.

As for the marks, there is one on the cam and on on the crank pully, but depending on how old it is, they sometimes wear off, but i hardly happens. it goes the same for hondas as almost all cars make sure its TDC and line it up. If you need instructions from a helms i can probably scan it, just let me know.

As for the water pump job itself, its not that bad, but make sure your coworker is using oem parts, as aftermarket pumps can lead to disasters with that car. Many people on Honda tech have reported using aftermarket pumps and having them fail in less then two mounts, (Mainly due to the way they drive them, but i never said that).

Well, she delivers pizza so the car will see some abuse. As for the pump, I told her I wanted to use a dealer part and not the Autozone piece she wanted to buy. At the very least I said to try Napa as Chinese piece of sh*t Autozone pumps are garbage. She said: "But it has a lifetime warranty". I said "That does not include installation when it fails". (BTW, it was changed with the timing belt last year.) I told her that they probably used an Autozone part and that is why it failed. If she get me the part I ask for, I will warranty the work for a year or so. If not, 3 months. I am also letting her defer payment on labor for a few weeks to help her out. However, I don't think I will touch it if she is not willing to buy a good pump. I do these things on my terms so that I do not wind up doing them over and over and over...

BTW, if you do have an import car with a timing belt, do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY FROM AUTOZONE WATER PUMPS!!!! I went through 3 in 2 months on my truck. It has a timing chain, so it was mildly irritating. I went through 2 in 6 months on a belt drive Mitsubishi, and it was a nightmare each time I had to do it. The second time was a warranty job after the failure of the first, and I was not happy.

Oh, and it's a manual trans 1996 Civic EX. I think that makes it a D16Y8 and not a D16Z6, but the difference between them is minor and mostly sensor related IIRC.

One more quick question: Is the crank pulley bolt reverse threaded or normal? I think the engine is reverse rotation, so I am kinda wondering.

1992-1995 American si and ex was a d16z6
1996-2000 American ex was a d16y8

Your totally on the nose, if I were you I wouldn't do the job without the oem pump either, tell her to go on eBay it can be found for a little cheaper then the dealer.

It's normal, wheb I took one off when the engine was out I used regular leftey loosey rightey tightey

I am off the hook on it. I had asked her if there was anywhere else she could take it and she did. I didn't really want to do it because it is just too hot to work outside in my driveway as it gets full sun until 3pm. She did get a Honda pump, and not parts store garbage, so I am happy. Yeah, I didn't get paid for it, but it is a relief as I didn't want to deal with it. Now I guess I'll just go outside and change the fuel filter on my Cutlass, and maybe finish putting the seats in.

Be happy you didn't it i hate doing timing belts on anything fwd there's never enough room for my hands. And the jacking the engine up and down a few times to get the upper motor mount out and other things its a pain.
