PONTIAC How does the seat belt light work?

My Bonneville has taken to turning the seat belt light on at random. When it does this, there is no buzzer but the light will be solid on for the rest of the time you are driving that day. When it is not doing this, the light doesn't do anything.

Is there a diagram that shows how the seat belt system works? I couldn't find anything on Malibu Racing that refrenced it.

Yeah it looks like the light is getting output from the buzzer module and also grounds to it too. Check grounds in the harness but otherwise theres a possibility the buzzer module is bad. I've heard of using 4th gen Camaro modules as plug and play alternatives. They have a different tone but work the same way and plug in the same. That's IF you have to replace it of course.

Ground completes the circuit and shuts the light off. Have you checked your seat belt harnesses for corrosion?
I unplugged and reseated the connector at the base of the female belt. It wasn't showing any corrosion, but I may need to meter it out to make sure it works.

I've been wondering if it has been bad all along. My headlight buzzer works but is barely audible. The seat belt buzzer has never worked correctly, and other than the light randomly coming on while driving, never lights up (even during startup).

I may try the F-Body buzzer if I can get to the junkyard. Was it all 4th Gen's or was there a year range?

If I recall correctly it’s all of that gen.

Did you take a look inside the buckle? The Seatbelt Switch inside the buckle -- which is to be open when the seat belt is buckled -- is somehow (when you are buckled) intermittently closing and thus signaling the logic in the Convenience Center to illuminate the lamp ... Anubis is suggesting that corrosion in the buckle -- likely on the Seatbelt Switch -- is the "how" the Seatbelt Switch is (electrically) shutting when physically it should be open.
