How to get throaty exhaust tone out of V6?

I am doing the exhaust on my 87 Buick Regal 3.8 N/A. I want as throaty as possible exhaust tone. I already have a brand-new intermediate pipe, so I am really looking at mufflers and tailpipes. What would be better, a cherry bomb glasspack with single tailpipe, or a chambered muffler? I love glasspacks on V8s, but I am a little afraid of the raspy, ricey tone at certain RPMs.
 
I would stay as far away as possible from glasspacks, nothing "throaty" about them. I dont remember the model but I seen a GN with Magnaflows on it and it sounded awesome! I personally would go with a good Flowmaster or Magnaflow over the annoying glasspacks.
 
Ok, I looked up some magnaflow chambered mufflers that are almost exact dimensions of my stock muffler, but I can't tell the difference between the two. Part numbers for them are 11254 and 12254. If anyone can figure out the difference between them, please let me know. And I know that I'll never get it to sound like a V8, and that's ok, as long as it makes some noise and doesn't sound like a civic with a fart can muffler.
 
did my GN with 3 inch stainless with magnaflo mufflers and it sounded awesome.had a muffler shop custom build the exaust.cost me $350 but it was well worth it.cant remember what mufflers he used but they were big
 
Just my unsolicited opinion -- V6s don't have a very sexy cadence to them to begin with. Making it louder or "throaty" only makes it worse. Personally, I'd wait until you do a V8 swap to get better exhaust. You won't likely see any performance gain by going to bigger/louder exhaust behind your stock engine. If you go on youtube and listen to exhaust clips using any given muffler, you'll find that they sound VERY different behind a V8 vs a V6.

ps. Sorry that 350 Buick deal went sour. I was looking forward to it.
 
Not all V6s sound bad with louder exhaust. I've found that the GM 60 degree V6s sound pretty good with a bit louder muffler on them. I agree that the 3.8 & 4.3 V6s don't sound quite as nice with a louder muffler on them, and I'm not sure why. I don't know if its the fact that they're 90 degree V6 engines, and maybe they're not as well balanced mechanically, which makes them sound a bit more "odd", with a louder exhaust system on them. I agree with staying away from glasspacks for the V6. I would look for something like a quieter type Flowmaster or something like that. Louder mufflers tend to amplify the "uneveness" in these engines. Let us know how things turn out.

I know what you mean, the sound is totally different. I thought it was something with the firing order, or the timing? Anyways, I don't want obnoxious noise, but I don't want granny-cadillac quiet either. And I appriciate the condolences on the 350, I was rather upset myself.
