Remember the Pontiac 400 that was full of water and stuck tight? (doing the unstuck) I got her working and it is very strong. But there is a stuck lifter tapping away and the rings must be rusted stuck because it is oil smoking on acceleration. When it gets put away for the winter I plan on filling the combustion chambers with ATF and letting it soak until next year. What would you recommend in the short term to get them loose?

Whe you put it away I would remove the oil and fill up the crankcase with diesel fuel til it's over the pistons and turn the engine a 1/4 turn by hand every week or so. For now I would try a mixture of marvel oil and diesel fuel in each cylinder, for the stuck lifter if you slowly drip some AFT down the carb when the engine is rinning that should free up the lifter and if yoiu have never done that before there is alot of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. That will also clean up the combustion chamber.

Ummmm, how will that unstick a lifter? A valve? Maybe. Lifter is in the crankcase, maybe a half quart of ATF in the oil- then 7000rpm.

Bonnewagon, what's the aversion to pulling it apart and fixing it correctly? These are all temporary remedies, not cures. It sounds like it could really use a hone, rings, and bearings, then stab a cam and lifters in just because.

I would recommend pouring Diesel in with the oili and running it for a little bit to see if that will do it.

Quart of ATF or marvel mystery in the oil and drive it on the LIE to exit 68 and back at 3AM so there is no traffic

after careful consideration to your query I think you have uncovered a minor flaw in my analogy....
