1985 cutlass supreme brougham- Chevy 350/350 ... at 60mph there is a low humming noise that rumbles the whole car... someone told me to check my rear end fluid OR my rear tire bearings? I’m new to the mechanical stuff ... any help would be greatly appreciated for said suggestions and please chime in with any input

Have you ever changed the rear end gear lube? Now would be a good time to pull the cover and check out the oil level, wear pattern and to see if anything is loose. The noise could also be the wheel bearings in the rear axle housing or U joints. Are you sure it is coming from the rear of the vehicle? It's hard to diagnose without seeing the car first hand.

I havent checked anything yet, I got the care last July with this setup and the guy I purchased it from DIDNT tell me much I’ve been doing little odds and ends stuff but I’m going to check the fluid this weekend and hopefully it’s just low ... the paint on the chunk looks unoriginal fingers crossed it at some point was rebuilt/swapped but I am going to check the fluid level... the yoke seemed pretty tight and not loose I’ve heard those can cuz the humming as well thanks

Can you tell what kind of rear end this is from the picture ? Would you know what type of oil weight I may need ?

Looks fine from what I see in the pics.

Did you rotate the wheels by hand? Any noise from the wheel bearings or rear when you do that?

Just wipe out the bottom of the housing with a rag to get out all the sediment.

Put the cover back on and fill the rear from the side plug. It's a round threaded plug with a 3/8 square recessed head. Use a small 3/8 extension and ratchet to remove it and fill with gear oil until it spills out.

Then pull the driveshaft and inspect/replace the u-joints. That where my money is at for vibration you are hearing.
