Hi guys. I need Help identifying my engine. I recently bought a 79 Monte Carlo. I can't find any number. I have not been able to find a number on it. I found a 551 number on they block. The intake number is 14057053, the Exhaust number is gm14007400LHK12. And the vin is 1Z37J9B546508.

I have read there should be a number stamped in the front-passenger side but I just cant find it.

There is a bare flat area that sticks out from the head mating surface on the front of the engine, passenger side. However if the engine was decked by a machine shop, you're out of luck.

If that is the original engine in your Monte Carlo it would of been an 267 c.i./4.4L, VIN code J (1Z37J9B546508). The front passenger side pad with the VIN stamp on it would have DMD in it (exmple: F1210DMD)
But with the "551" casting, it looks like a 305 c.i./5.0L (full cast number 14088551, 2 piece rear main seal.) Most likely its an RPO LG4 305, 145 H.P. from the early/mid 1980's. It will its own 3 letter code on the passenger front pad. That code will tell what year it is.
