Hey guys I put in a new Ignition switch because My key wouldn't come out, The install went fine. But I have the same issue with the new Ignition. It will not come back and release. Floor mounted shifter. I'm in park, have tried to wiggle the steering wheel. Sometimes it works fine, sometime not... Any idea's?

87 Monte SS with sport steering wheel if that matters.

Might be something with the back drive linkage not getting the coulmn into the right spot. Has the trans ever been out of the car? Anything on the back drive linkage loose? Worn/missing parts at the pivot bracket on the frame?

Factory installed floor shifter?

If so watch the column with the arrow pointed at it.

When you move the shifter, does the column move with it?

And if it moves grab it with you hands and see if you can turn it counter clockwise. Then try to return the key. If that part of the column is not all the way to the park position the key will not return and come out.

have a look at the column as it passes through the firewall into the engine bay. You'll see the OEM shifter linkage running perpendicular to the shaft along the firewall, move that down (or up - can't remember which) and then try the key...

Yes and if the column moves it still has to be all the way counter clockwise or the key will not turn all the way back and come out.

Red circle is where to make your adjustment on the linkage.

Also check at the top of the linkage rod. There should be a nylon bushing inside the rubber grommet, If that was ever apart there is a chance its missing.
