I'm looking at a 2008 Grand Cherokee for a "new" winter beater. It has a 4.7 with a broken valve spring so it's going for a good price. Do any of you have any experience with these engines and do the valves normally drop when a spring breaks? It's got 150,000 miles on it. It's out of town so it's not convenient to take a trip to take a look at it. If I get I'll get it flatbedded back and do the repairs. ..Thanks

JUNK engines!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you get any Jeep make sure it has the 4.0 straight six!!!!

The heads are a very very very common problem on the 4.7's

One of my Daughters has a 2010 with the 4.7, 130,000 km's an had nothing but issues with the Valves, springs an lifters. She's had it into the dealer in BC time after time getting it fixed. As l pay the bill l said last time l want to know what the bottom end looks like, it was perfect! Nothing but head problems an headaches!

She scrapped($500) it an now drives a 78 Elcamino l had!

Agreed. Known for head issues. I've seen a lot of spit out followers (rockers) but can't remember a broken spring. They really aren't too bad if they've had good oil changes. When they break they generally aren't worth fixing though. Too bad, I always liked the way they ran.

Bought a 00 durango 4.7 that overheated. Thought maybe just head gaskets? Compression check, 2 dead cyls. Rebuilt engine. New gaskets, pistons, rebuilt heads. Drove for maybe 50 miles and randomly shut off all the time. Changed cam sensors, never threw codes, ended up being a crank sensor. Broke off in block trying to remove, pulled oil pan and front diff, pounded remaining sensor into the crankcase.

Drove 500 miles, replacement timing chain I got for $100 failed and went out of time. Bought the $360 cloyes and was ok. Got sick of it, dad started driving it. Got 20k and maybe 2 years on it and the rebuilt heads dropped a valve seat or cracked a head or something. Scrapped it.

It was the biggest displacement no power, poor fuel mileage vehicle i've ever owned.

I had a 2007 Grand Cherokee with that engine for two years. It was a money pit! Lots of transmission issues. Replaced the non serviceable u-joints with a new 500 dollar drive shaft from the drive shaft shop. Non serviceable u-joints, what a joke. F#ck Jeeps! Older ones with the 4.0 are ok though.
