I did the swap with a tilt manual 82-83 S10 column. The lower mast is shorter than a A/G body mast. So is the steering shaft. I used:
A die cast 78 upper bowl
Manual S10 lower bowl
S10 upper mast
Manual A body lower mast
A/G body steering shaft
And the other items I mentioned in my other post.

Excuse my ignorance, but whats the point of the lever?

Does it allow you to release the key with the ignition on? I just leave the column in park position. Isn't locking the column when they key is removed the point?

On the columns with the key release lever, you can't rotate the lock cylinder to the "lock" position without pushing down the lever. The point of this is to prevent you from removing the key and having the steering wheel lock while you are in motion.

Remember the recent GM key recall? Where the ignition key would rotate backwards because of all the random crap hanging from the key in the crummy GM lock cylinder? It seems the problem happens when ignition locks the wheel while rolling at 60 mph and the car steers into a bridge abutment. The key release lever in these old school columns prevented the cylinder from rotating unless you deliberately turned the key while pushing down the lever.
