Definately a former diesel car. It should even say "Diesel Fuel Only" on the instrument cluster and gas door.

Actually I don't see any diesel markings on the car anywhere and the sticker under the hood says "4.9" so I'm guessing the car originally had a Pontiac 301. My '80 was a diesel and now has in it a Pontiac 301 that is busted so I'm familiar with all the diesel labeling everywhere.

That's another clue right there.
An Olds would have never come with a Pontiac 301 from the factory. It would have had either a 260 Olds or 305 Chevy.
Somewhere along the line the fan shroud was swapped, probably when that gas motor went in.
Does it say "unleaded fuel only" on the instrument cluster? Those are easy to swap, probably at the same time everything else was swapped out, which means I wouldn't trust the mileage on the odometer either.

That's a diesel car, trust me. You can verify it with the VIN.

Actually the gauge cluster does not say diesel or unleaded kind of odd now that I think about it. Hmmm what should I look for on the VIN to figure out if it was a diesel? Kind of odd if the two Cuttys I ended up with are both former diesel cars.

That looks like the twin to my 78, geen outside and in.
Others are right no Pontiac engine was avalible, the olds 307, Chevy 305, diesel V8 (Olds 350 if I remeber right) ad the mighty Olds 260 .

Are you 100% a 301 was not an option?

Regals had the 301 stock.

What's that bell housing off of?
Looks like early '60s SBC passenger car. Date code will be just to the side of the hole for the input bearing retainer. Should be something like D 17 2 (April 17th, 1962) for example.

That's what I was thinking. The little bit of Chevrolet orange peeking out was an indication.

The bellhousing has "GM2" stamped into it, does that help? Any other numbers I should look for?

Oh and 5th digit in the VIN is P not N. There is also an M but no N.

The "p" makes it originally a 4.3l 260 diesel.

A casting # that starts with 38XXXXXX or 39XXXXXXX. Google the number and I'm sure you'll get plenty of hits. The truck bellhousings usually had mounting pads at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions and the transmission just hangs off the back. They also had a larger (5 1/8"?) hole too.
