Getting ready to install Maddog Headers on a 79 GP 455.

Ebay $321! I hope they are what were advertised. Not used but a few yrs old...

Anybody have any advice, warnings or tips?

Thanks!

Is it a Pontiac 455 or an Olds?

I just ask because you have the heading marked OLDS

But they look pretty straight forward.

Dont forget to remove the oil filter

A mini starter is always a good idea with long tubes.

Since heat soak is a common issue with them.

Yeah, that was on my mind as well.
Any recommendations? Powermaster or other?
I thought I read a thread about changing out the solenoid on a mini starter for even better heat resistance.
In all reality, I need to just chill on the header install and order the damn starter.
She already has trouble when she is hot to the point I'm anxious about turning her off away from the crib.
Currently, I have RAMAIR manifolds with 2.5" pipes...

I was also curious if the motor mounts are going to need detached but understand that is something I may just have to find out for myself.

A lot of people use the Ford style solenoid.

I have had great luck with Tilton starters.

I have had mine for over 20 years now, in 3 or 4 different cars and just now is it starting to get tired and could use a rebuild.

I know the much cheaper sbc mini starter fits the Olds V8. Since they fit the Olds V8 they should fit the Pontiac since they use the same mini starter.

You Will need these tools to install headers on a Pontiac : oxy acetylene torch, welding machine, long pry bar, big hammer, porta power hydraulic jack, grinder, and sawzall. Good luck with your headers
