Instead of overpaying for a magnetic transmission drain plug (3/8" NPT), does anyone see a problem with attaching a strong rare earth magnet to a regular plug? Anyone done that?

Any likelihood that the magnet will be dislodged and damage the transmission? Note: My pan is cast aluminum, hence magnet needs to be mounted on the drain plug.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Andry, I'm in a similar situation with the 4L80E swap in my truck. I bought a deep cast aluminum pan. It has a magnetic drain plug but I deem it insufficient (perhaps wrongly). I'm thinking about gluing the OE 4L80E magnet to the bottom of the pan using super weatherstrip adhesive. The stuff can be used for gaskets so I think it will hold up.

I'll check if our Canadian outfits have these... It's so much easier to get auto parts down in the States!!

Might not be a bad idea...

Guys, thanks for the replies!!

Dorman makes them so you shouldn't have a problem.
