This is the foot for my main hoop....pretty much the same spot where your roll cage is going in the pics above.....

Yes, you do need to box the C channel frame anywhere the cage will attach. Its not a written rule as far as I remember but if you want to have the car certified, some inspectors want it. You do not have to box the entire channel. A 6" piece in the frame that extends beyond both ends of the tube is sufficient for passing. I had to do the front of the channel on my 70 because of where the A pillar bar attached.

Sorry to not reply sooner. Been working 6 days a week last few weeks ain't done much. I have been trying to figure out why the s&w cage kit came with 2 6x6in 1/8th inch thick plates. Any ideas?

Probably for the lateral supports if you install them.

This is why. The main hoop will have 2 short diagonals going from about the height of the crossbar to the driveshaft tunnel. SInce there is no frame there, they use the plates. IF you had ladder bars or a four link, you can tie it to the front crossmember of the ladder bars.

I didn't like the idea of welding to the floorpan when the rest of the bars are welded to the frame. Instead, I ran another diagonal across the main hoop just above the driveshaft tunnel then welded the laterals to it......that way any movement on the body cushions won't attempt to crack welds at the tunnel. The rear seat goes in easily and because I spaced the stays wide it is still functional.....

How is the S&W kit? I was looking at it last night. It seems to be one of the most popular on the market. I’ve still got a lot of work to do before I’m ready for a cage though. I’ve braced and notched my frame and I will be boxing it hopefully later today I pick up the steel yesterday, I got enough to weld the pads to the frame for a cage as well. I was also looking at the Alston 4 point on jegs it’s $167 shipped not a bad price. I would install that first then build the rest myself.

From my research, it appears there's two styles of main hoop available. One that welds directly on top of the OEM frame rails and another where you need to fabricate a platform to weld inside the rails for it to sit on, you might want to confirm which style the S&W kit has.....
