have 1987 old's cutlass that i removed the dash to restore. also disconnected the fuse box under the dash and the engine bay to paint the compartment . ok so i reattached fuse box /wire harness in engine bay to box inside car.. the problem I'm having is when i turn the key forward and turn on the lights, the headlights and the two park light turn signal come on but the back lights doesn't. but if i put the car in reverse then the back light will come on (I'm doing all this with the car not started, it start find no problem ). also when i press on brakes with the car in park only the driver side brake light will light up. but the passenger side doesn't. and if i press on the brakes for more than three or four second it will blow the fuse for brake lights. i check for all the grounds i could find in the dash harness. i found two on the driver side and one inside the trunk in the rear light wire harness on the driver side. the computer harness on the passenger side that goes through the fire wall was removed when i got the car (no computer) and all the light was working find. there are some wires that the pervious owner had hack up that seem to be for the stereo system and for an alarm they installed . so long story made short i have a cluster fu.k. this car seem be fighting me to the end. so if someone have any advice are question i would appreciate it.

Why is it a wiring problem if you just put stuff back together? The only way it would be wiring is if you pinched a harness, missed a ground, or missed a plug. It sounds like the neutral safety switch is out of adjustment.

good call

i hope your right about natural switch. I search for as many grounds as i could find. i just assume it was a wiring problem. so.... that's why when ever i have a problem and need advise i go to where great mind hang out
it has th350 transmission. early in the year i had to have a friend reattach linage on the transmission that can off because the cotter pin got left off when the transmission was first installed. Now I'm wondering if its in the right gear. ill check linkage tomorrow . hopefully its something as simple. its has a column shifter

I'm not a mechanic, still learning so if can you provide a little insight how to go about adjusting the neutral switch it would help

thanks for feedback and diagrams

Shorted tail lights bulbs. Remove or disconnect them and recheck for fuse blowing.

the rear light harness is not part of the fuse box, it is the connection to the left of the box and the brown wire, 3rd up from the bottom (I think), is your rear tail lights. The wiring in that harness is aluminum so with corrosion and moving it around you may have broken the wire.

Wow didn't the harness was made of aluminum I did fold and zip tie that part of the harness so I could paint the floor and put down sounds and heat insulation.I'll have to double check that thanks
