Ive read a bunch of threads about exhausts. I need a full header back system for my 81. I called the place out here that every one seems to use and I was kinda shocked at the price. For a SS 3" exhaust the guy told me between $2K and $3K and two full days at their shop. Thats with an x pipe.
I originally wanted a 3" to the muffler and 2 1/2" tailpipes behind the rear wheels. They said they wouldnt do that. Something about the mandrill bender set up for only 3". Ok, revise plan.
Now Im looking at some of the kits. I know a guy with a shop and hes used the Pypes kits and said they fit decent. My question is do they all have the x pipes ? Is there any company offering a kit without it ? And a smaller tail pipe option ?
Dont jump all over me for asking. Trying to decide what I want to use. Im even calling around to get prices on an aluminized steel system. The car wont go out much and its in a dry heated garage so I doubt rust will be much of an issue.

The Jegs/Summit/Heartthrob exhaust kits in SS don't have a X pipe but are 2.5". Not sure if those come in 3". Now are you looking at under bumper or quarter panel exits?

3k is a complete rip-off. 2k possible for a high-end system but still high IMO. I had mine done in 2.5" S/S, all custom for less than that....

Summit has Pypes kits on sale right now for about $40 off if you don't mind doing the work to make them fit and modifying the tailpipes for side exit.

I have a place down the block from me

They did my Malibu 3 inch with cutouts, xpipe (which I regret), and then 2.5 after the mufflers over the axle out the sides

500 cash took 2 hours

Not stainless not mandrel bent.

Im sure he has stainless just never asked or was interested in it.

If you are under 600HP 3 inch is a waste of $$$$$$$$

This is a recent thread that will help you out quite a bit.

To make a long story short, if you want the nicest, behind the tire 3" kit go with the Hooker Blackheart. On sale everywhere right now plus Jegs has even more money off.

Otherwise the Pypes 2 1/2" behind the tires kit is nice, their 3" doesn't fit well and they don't offer behind the tires versioni in 3".

I echo the advise that 3" is unecessary unless you are pushing some serious power. It's a pin to make pipes that big fit without rubbing on anything. If you have no emissions requirements and an automatic transmission, use the Summit or Jegs 2-1/2" G-body kits and add the headers and dual hump crossmember. If your body mounts are flattened, you may have some work to do to clear the floorpan. You'll have to add your own X-pipe if you must have that. Both brands basic kits exit under the bumper like a Monte SS, but it's not hard to cut and adapt to exit behind the rear wheels. Stainless Steel is an option, but welding is a problem. It's all how much you want to spend. Coated headers? Extra. Ask Turna nicely and he might even help you.
