Nah. That's not unusual. The "valleys" accumulate a lot of crud. Will almost certainly need new knock sensors. Mine did. Be sure to put a little RTV silicone "U" when you replace them to channel the water away from the cavities.

that is if a rod didn't break and take a chunk out of the block or maybe the crank broke and cracked the block

I'd rather spend $400 on a running engine to rebuild...and I know what you are going to say, I'm lazy and have no sense of adventure...:D

LKQ price for whole liftout (accessories, harness, intake, transmission 5.3 or 6.0) $475.... new gaskets, valve job etc. I'm excited...got a free sbc engine cradle in hopes it would fit an LS (anybody know?) At least I'd have a way to roll it out of the way :)

Run away! That is not a good deal... Unless you just need spare parts. Even then that a $150 engine at best.
