Mecum H/O

Because that's about 5k more than they're worth. 😛

My dad called me the other day surprised at the low prices cars were getting at Mecum auctions. I asked which one. He said "Mecum Dallas". I have said for years I would never sell a car at a Dallas auction. I would buy one there, but never sell one there.

A Mecum Auction is like a Wednesday at Barrett Jackson.

Unfortunately, other than the Grand National GNX, they will never be big money cars. Part of the reason the 60's and 70's performance models especially were so fondly remembered, they could beat anything off the show floor in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Then gas became affordable again and there was reliable high fuel octane available, which helped. They sky rocketed in price due to nostalgia. Now days, what can't beat the H/O's 15.84 1/4 mile, almost any car off the show room floor can now, with ease. I own the slowest new muscle car, it is a SECOND quicker in the 1/4! The V6 nearly doubles the horsepower and even out torques the Olds V8. It is 250 pounds heavier and gets at least 10 mpg better than the H/O and even more loaded. You have to love these G body cars, as an investment they stink. I keep telling you guys, these cars will never be worth money like the 60's cars. As an extra insult, my Province changed the 30 year rule to Classic really cheap licensing to 1987. So I pay $80 a month compared to just $148 per year for my 70S for a car with no book value.

$80/month?! Time to ditch the '88 and get crackin' on the '70 S.

Exactly why it may get a quick sand, body filler, sand and a Gloss Black paint job, along with a for sale sign, next Summer. I plan on buying a tent garage on sale to use as a paint booth. The cheap HVLP guns worked really nice for the price. Plus I need practice before I paint the 70S.

Usually mecum or barrett's never shows cars like that, you see them coming up on to the block and bam it's a commerical and when they come back it's a rustang or an exotic some one couldn't afford. If they showed them more maybe more interest and then more $$$ but as long as vetts, stangs, and Camaros and mopar rule the auction not going to happen. Every 2 years its like the same cars go past

G-Body's won't be investment cars unless its a GN/GNX or a 83/84 Hurst Olds..

They're akin to the 80's Mustangs.. Unless its some sort of "Special Edition" (eg. saleen, steeda, shelby, SVT Cobra) its never going to be worth much.. and even then, in those cases, most aren't worth that much either.

Add to that, even a current 4-door, plain-jane, base model grocery getter will beat most all G-Body's in the 1/4 mile stock for stock..

People dump money into G-Body's for a multitude of reasons.. love, the attention, the compliments, the challenge, being a glutton for punishment, the frustration... but never, ever, for money.
