Recently decided to build a spare 305 I was given
It was given to me as a unknown 305

So I checked all the numbers yesterday
Seems I ended up with a lq9
305. 190 hp ho tpi motor from a 86/87 trans am

I did a tear down today. It’s got l2486f pistons. So it’s a fairly decent rebuilt 305 using a forged piston

I’m thinking about either going to a 334 type stroker or now knowing it’s fairly decent I’ll just re ring it re nestling it and toss a cam and some heads on it or port the ones it has

The heads are 58 cc 416 castings

Most people are so against building a 305, I say if that's what you want to do go for it. Seems like you already have a plan. good luck with the build, can't wait to see the end results.

I agree
I know the 350 is a better choice
But I’m just going to go with what I have
What the heck right

No reason it won’t make 250 -260 hp

I would just work with what you have as far as bottom end, the problem with the 305 is not the CI but the 3.736 bore so instead of spending all of the money on a stroker kit and machine work just to add 30 CI I would use that money for a better cam and heads that will flow well with that small bore.IMO

Go for it. Is that a factory roller cam block? I say have some fun with it and go for a hydraulic roller and a set of 58 cc fast burn aluminum heads.

I agree with 565bbc.

Besides the time & money, it takes more effort to stroke a 305 for little gain. I think that with a good set of ported heads, along with a decent cam and a bump in compression that the build will yield a decent power gain. Will work out just fine for an old school cruiser.

Good luck.

I agree
I’m leaning towards a set of heads from tfs
The 30310002 heads and a decent hyd roller
In the 218/224 area with .520 lifts and a 113 lsa

Compression will be roughly 10 even given the small chamber and a .015 gasket

I don’t care about a 350 to be honest
I’m looking at a simple 305 rebuild
It’s just a cruiser

Turbo and nitrous it to Obote average boat anchor status sounds fun

I think I’ll just re ring what I have. It’s looking half decent as it is
