If 5 inches has been suggested as the minimum, then that would be Ontario building Code spec. I prefer the Holmes on Homes school of thought on the subject and would go with pads either 18x 18, or 24x24, poured to a depth of 10-12 inches as far up as grade before the floor goes in. There would also be a heavy amount of mesh and rebar added in. The absolute best would be piers around the 4 foot mark for depth in the hole to avoid any frost heave action but the cost of the 'crete for something like that is probably evil to hideous in $$$$ CDN. I did a modular pour for a mezzanine level sidewalk and steps project several years back and it took around 125 bags of 66 lb premixed concrete to complete the job. And it was all hand mix and pour!

Best of luck with your project and be sure to have all the inspections done and signed off on. All it takes is one self-officious minor functionary in planning and development to allege that the paperwork isn't in order to ruin your summer with petty bureaucrap.

Well, I haven't updated the thread for awhile, and there has been some progress recently. In the past couple of weeks, the builder has been able to get the building pretty much completely framed in. There are a couple of areas that need some more bracing, but I've been told that should only take a couple of hours, and that will happen this coming week. The sand inside where the floor will be is settling quite well. The builder says that they may be able to get the floor finished, and the concrete poured by sometime in July, which is ahead of his original schedule. I picked out the colours for the steel roofing and siding. The roof will be black, to match the steel roof on our house, and the siding will be a terra cotta colour, to match the brick on our house. The windows, doors and trim will be white. The steel work should start before the end of the month.
Here are some recent photos.

Looking good.

All these shop-build and expansion threads are making me envious for more storage myself.

At least I can watch all these other buildings go up in the meantime.

Oh, the joys of launching, landing, positioning and truing up pre-engineered rafter trusses. FUN.

OK, so once again, its been awhile since my last update. There's been good progress in the past month. The building inspector was here, to inspect the framing after it was completed, and it passed. Several weeks ago, the exterior steel siding and steel roofing material arrived. The roofing is all done, and the exterior siding is almost all done. The wall that has the bay doors has been insulated, vapour barrier is up, and they installed plywood on the inside of that wall, to add a bit of extra strength. This past Thursday, the electricians were here. The interior wiring is done, and the electrical panel for the shop has been installed. Its been rainy for the past week or so, the the ground here is still pretty wet. Yesterday was nice, with sunshine and warmer temps. The builder wants the ground to dry up a bit, so he can trench for the wiring that's going to run from my house to the shop. He's going to co-ordinate with the electrician, to try to get the trench done, and the wiring done in 1 day, if he can, and he's hoping to do that sometime this week. Also, they're hoping to finish up the backfilling around the outside of the foundation wall, and now that the interior wiring has been run, they can carry on with insulating the walls. Now that the siding and roofing are there, its really starting to take shape.

You going to go with an HVAC installation that includes the A/C for summer?

I'm sorry, but no I'm not. I really wanted the radiant in-floor heating for the winter, so I can work in there when its cold, and I can't drive my hobby cars. It got to the point, that between the cost of putting up the building, doing the electrical, hoist, compressor, in-floor heating and everything else, that you have to be able to draw a line in terms of overall cost. If I'm in there when its really hot, I'll get a couple of big fans, open the windows and the bay doors, and work that way. I've worked in plenty of hot shops during my time in the trade. I can take a break when I need to. The house is close by, it has A/C and cold liquids.

How about an office area to keep cool? That's my plan.

I appreciate the idea, but the building is 30ft square. By the time I get the hoist in there, toolboxes, benches, store some equipment, etc, space will disappear fast. The back door of my house is about 60ft from the shop. If the weather gets too hot, I'll go inside, or I can always wait until it cools down a bit. This is Canada after all. While we get our share of warm weather, we also get our share of cooler weather as well.

I know what you mean I built a 30x26 with an upstairs storage loft thinking it would be plenty big enough. Nope I was wrong!!
