I'm only breaking the cam in, the procedure from comp cams calls to run at 2000 RPM for 30 minutes. The engine is an oldsmobile 403, 350 rocket heads 66CC chamber, my C/R should be between 9 - 9.5 :1 .

Stock replacement water pump, aluminium 4 core afco racing radiator, 18 PSI cap, be-cool fluid mixed with normal prestone.

So what happened was, i was about 10-15 minutes into break in and one of the heater core hoses blew off. I have these stupid stainless steel sleeving kits and that was the problem, it wouldnt let the clamp bite down hard enough. But i glanced at the temp gauge after i had it shut down and noticed it hit 225 degrees........Thats kind've scary, i don't want to fry my motor before i even get a chance to drive it.

Couple things to keep in mind, when i started break in the cap i had on the radiator was a 15 PSI, i just went and picked up the 18 PSI. I didn't have the fan shroud on and that probably hurt me, and i don't have any additional fans to supply air flow.

Tomorrow i'm going to get ahold of some good fans to supply more air flow, install the fan shround and new radiator cap.

Is there anything else i should do?

I've been reading around that the normal operating temp for these motors is between 195 and 210. Allot of other people say they hit 235 all the time with no problems, REALLY? that's ****ing hot!

Tomorrow once i get everything setup i'm going to repeat the break in process and hopefully all will be well.

Oh and the stupid *ss stainless steel sleeving kit is gone, just hose and clamps now.

What temp stat do you have, i would use a 180deg. Yes get the cooling fans corrected before running again. When you start the motor run it with the radiator cap off, wait till the stat opens, you will know when this happens because your water will drop so be ready to top off, you will see the water flowing across the top cores, You will also notice your top, bottom and heater core hoses are all hot, this removes air pockets. Then install the radiator cap and you should be good. Use the 15psi cap some aluminum radiators will blow apart above that, i have a 13psi in my car.

Get your fan shroud on, that makes a huge dif. You can get most of the air out if you take out the temp sending unit from the intake while u fill (engine off). like what was said leave the cap off till the top hose gets hot. the water will rise till the stat opens so don't fill it all the way up. 195 is the standard temp for a stat.

I kept the cap off initially to purge any air out, i never thought to pop the temp sensor loose. I'll start on the fan shroud tomorrow, the hold up is that i have to make one myself. I'll be using the shroud from the 79 T/A as a template, i'll post up some pictures by the end of tomorrow.
