Even though I have a Pontiac GP (1983), the cars are similar enough. For what it's worth here's some info:
1. Original wheel/tire combo: 195/75R14 (front & back)
2. First mod: 225/60R14
3. Second mod: 245/50R16
Never had any issues.

Now I run 18x8 in the front (245/40) and 18x9 in the back (275/35), but that's with all around disks and different suspension.
