Greetings family, I recently installed a B&M floor shifter in my baby (1986 Cutlass).
Once I built up the courage to drill into the floor, the install went without any problems.
I rewired both the reverse lights and the neutral saftey from the actual neutral safety switch. The reverse lights work great but the car still starts in any gear with the neutral safety wires hooked to the shifter. I retraced all of the wiring to make sure that all of my connections are correct but it still starts in any gear. The wires that were for the neutral saftey that I rewired were one orange and two black, one black with a white stripe and one solid black. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be? I even tried it without the wires hooked up and no luck. Again, can anyone tell me what may be wrong?

I ran into a similar problem, reverse lights were no problem to wire. I am pretty sure I ended up wiring a switch in between the ignition and the starter.

X2. The G-body cars don't have an electrical neutral safety switch. They use a mechanical linkage that blocks the key from turning to the START position unless the shifter is in park or neutral. If you've removed the backdrive linkage from the trans to the steering column, then you've disabled this blockout function, which is why you can start the car in any gear. The two wires that look like they should be for a neutral safety switch are actually the park/neutral signal to the ECU. This is used by the computer to change the idle speed when the car is in park or neutral vs. in drive.

Bingo. 😉

That's why on my brother's car we tossed the electrical micro switches that came with his shifter and just made a few modifications to the stock linkage at the trans and kept the entire backdrive linkage. Works perfectly.
