Hello everyone living just outside Ottawa On. Owned a couple 87 GN in the past along with a 83 Buick Riv convertible. Now I just have the 87 Monte SS. Had a quick question it still has the 305 HO with about 111ooo Kms. Lookin to drop in a crate engine but I do not want to get into replacing the rear end to handle a large engine. Any recommendations would be great, cheers!

Depends on how much HP your going to throw at it and what your going to use it for. Stock rear end should handle 300 - 350ish HP

There are lots of options to choose from,but,IMO,if you want to retain the stock 7.5 rearend and/or transmission,you will want to keep the power level relatively low.
Maybe something along the lines of this ATK crate engine;
325 HP would be a nice upgrade from the 305.
A lot will depend on how you are going to drive it.
I can tell you from my personal experience that the 7.5 will not stand up to a lot of abuse.
Yes,you can put a lot of money and work into one and they may last longer,but you could probably put a 9 inch in for not a whole lot of difference in $$$$.
Want a bit more power,there a lots of 383 sbc crates to choose from,like this one;
If you really feel brave,big block's will fit with a bit of work;
Up to you..

It is strictly for on road use. I was injured on the job back in 1996 and use a manual wheelchair as a result so with the doors being so big on the g-bodies it was a great fit. I just attend cruise nights with it or go to the camper 15 mins away. I bought it back in 2009 with 89,ooo kms and have only ever used it for A-B driving....no interest in racing just want a bit more giddy-up in the go. Was told a 283 would be ideal by the local mechanic without changin *ss end.

I would get a crate 350/355 SBC and stay under 350 horse and these come with a warranty IMO I wouldn't waste time with a 283.

Thank you for input. So you think under 350 HP the *ss end could handle it? A little green not really mechanically inclined. What would one expect to pay Canadian on a 350 crate?

The rear end can break if it hooks under power which if you ran slicks would be an issue but with the driving style you are suggesting I would not worry a bit about it.
You should have a 373 gear in your rear end and a 200R4 trans and they should both work well with the added power at that level.

Welcome ,

Cost of a crate engine in Canadian dollars to your door , add up the exchange rate ,shipping and duty.too much.

Your local GM parts counter will sell you one of their's Performance crate's and delivery to a shop of your choice.
There is a Forum member here from the Ottawa area ,that I sure owns a Auto Mechanic shop ,I track him down and ask if he knows of any Good 350's being pulled out for LS swaps.
And the other cost you need to think about is the install and who you trust to do it. Then where's the list of may as well items......new starter , new rad , new alternator ,hose's/ belts , shiny nuts /etc.

Enjoy

Beware that many of the cheaper crate engines have lower CR than the HO 305 which results in them not making much more power in the real world. You will want a crate with at least 9.5 CR and you may want to get a roller cam version.

I would agree, any crate engine under 350 hp will be fine. I was looking at the ATK 350/345 hp version for my car. I forget if that was because it had the hydraulic roller and the 325 was flat tappet. The rearend will be fine for what you want to do. I had a monte SS rear in my old 79 Malibu and ran 13.60's with it at the track. Spinning the tires on the street occasionally won't hurt it.
