I’m new on here a couple of days ago. I have a 78 Monte Carlo that I’ve had for 22 years and working on a frame off right now. Goin mild 355, Saginaw 4 speed, run through a 8.8. I just bought a 80 Monte as a parts car but as I’ve dug around my new purchase, I’m thinking I might have a turbo car here. Any help in how to decode both cars vin and body tags would be great. Already searched everywhere and have no rpo stickers on either car. Thanks I’m advance and very glad to be here!

There will be no RPO stickers on the car. It kinda doesn't matter if it's a turbo car because obviously it's not there or you'd have known about that already. You will need a build sheet or invoice or some other paperwork with RPOs on it to determine the options that were definitely slated for your "new" car. The Turbo cars had a little bulge on the hood. Maybe it's there, maybe it's not. Also, 1980 Turbo Montes all came with 6RB rear axle code, with 2.41 rear gears and 3 speed auto. Also, the VIN would start with 1Z373A with the second 3 designating a turbo car (LC8, 170 hp), and the A signifying it's a 1980. Right after that there's the plant code, such as R for Arlington, TX, or Z for Freemont, etc.

Anyway, post up your VIN and body tag pics and we can tell you a bit more about what GM built that week. :)

Ok, thanks. I don’t have the vin numbers at home with me right now but I have the body tags. I think I know the 78 but the 80 is all red oxide primer now so no real clue.

78 - model year
1AZ37- Chevrolet, AZ37 is A-body Monte Carlo 2 door.
K- Leeds, MO assembly plant.
050304- Fisher number. It's on the build sheet somewhere.
24G - light blue cloth interior
A52- bench seat
22L- light blue paint
11T- white vinyl top, or could be white painted top, not sure.
11A02- weird. The 11A is likely first week of November 1977 scheduled build week. The 02...could that delineate 2nd shift? This one I'm not sure of as I've never seen this like that before.
0805- Another Fisher number and it also can be found on the build sheet somewhere.

80- model year
03D (verify that, it's what it LOOKS like to me)- Scheduled build week. 4th week of March, 1980.
1AZ37- Chevrolet Monte Carlo 2-door
K- Leeds, MO assembly plant
134238- Fisher number. On the build sheet if you can find it.
79W- Claret Vinyl (W signifies sierra vinyl)
85L- Gray body color
76M- Claret accent color
L- Lacquer paint
A51- Bucket Seats
19- not sure if part of the 0404 or something else. No idea. If it's a color of something, the color is black.
0404- Another Fisher number and it also can be found on the build sheet somewhere.

Best I can do here. VIN will tell you if it was a turbo car or not.
