87 monte carlo SS. So opened door, dome light just shut off. Opened other door, no dome light. No power, nothing. Lights dont work. Car literally acts like it has no battery. Bought new battery, cleaned terminals then put it in. Nothing. Car acts like battery completely removed. Testing, getting juice to starter and alternator. Dome loght worked for second, not sure if because testing. Then sh*t off when key turned. Nothing. Not a short, disconnected negative and hooked test light go negative wire and touched neg battery terminal - no light. Help! Retested starter area after dome light came on for sec - now green line in pic has power. Confused.

Test lights are a great tool but will get you in trouble. A test light will light at minimal voltage but when you put a load on a system the voltage may drop drastically. Get a voltmeter and learn the basics. Connections at starter a possibility also. . If the car has been performing properly I lean toward bad connections at the battery or a bad battery. Remember you can get corrosion inside the battery cable so look for swelling in the cable that might indicate an issue. have you had some odd electrical stuff or has work been done on your ride? Check grounds to body and block.

Fixed it. Gash in positive battery cable going to starter. Way it was jiggled it gave power when tested but not when in car which confused me. Ground on body is good you can see from picture above, ground to block was fine. New cable from positive to starter and alternator 8 bucks from oriellys.
