So the other day I was replacing the wiper motor on my 80 el camino and when I got done I tested it and it worked fine, so I turned the key off. A little bit later I tried to start it and nothing happened, no dash lights or radio or anything. The battery is brand new and fully charged, the alternator is brand new, I got the starter tested and it was fine. I tested some of the fuses on the panel and got power to the courtesy lamp and such but none of the others. I suspect the ignition switch or a faulty wire somewhere. Has anyone had a similar issue and how would I test the ignition switch?

Check the fusable link at the starter.

Right underneath the wiper motor is the rear of the fuse panel.

You may have nicked something. start jiggling wires and see if u get power back

If not I would agree with 81Regal

That is only 1 of the wires, another goes to the fuseblock/ignition switch.

it takes alot to burn a fusible link, I would remove the wiper motor to have a good look at the wiring to the fuse block

I have three wires leaving the starter, one is a thick red one, a brownish/beige one, and a black one. The brown one wasn't even hooked up to anything, the red one ran to the fuse box and I don't know where the black one goes. Sorry I know I'm making this a little difficult but the guy who owned it before me swapped the engine and the wiring is kind of a mess so it's hard to work through.

1 fusible link red wire goes to the fuse box, the other fusible link red wire goes to the alternator

The black one is likely the purple wire that feeds power to the starter solenoid.
