Everything is off the front of the engine but the balancer.

With the Olds 307 does the oil pan have to drop or is it just that plate the water pump sits on and the chain is there?

Pan has to come down or loosened quite a bite. The oil pan gasket seals to the timing cover just like a chevy engine

If you can loosen the dowels, the cover goes on easier, along with trimming the seal and a lot of RTV. I wish Olds would have improved on the design like the intake separate from the distributor.

Important tip- If you take the cover off, don't lose those power steering pump spacers!!

What's your plans, a new timing set? I've heard some stories about the Oldsmobile timing sets being off so one needs to degree their cam. If your not building a National Record Holder and don't have a degree wheel and piston stop/dial indicator yada yada, just call Bill Travado @BTRacing. He carries differently priced timing sets. The lower priced ones are fine and you'll know your timing dot to dots are in the correct location. Jmo, good luck.
