A few days ago I was moving some of my stash of parts around and figured I would post some pictures of differences of olds BB and SB oil pans.
And yes they they are not clean I do it for a reason.
First picture, top pan is a BBO bottom is a SBO. I dont have a Toro pan so it won't be mentioned. There is a baffle in the BBO pan and none in the SBO pan. Purpose of the baffle is to keep the oil from going towards the front of the pan and sucking air on deceleration .

Second picture you can see a big difference between both pans, top BBO bottom SBO. The BBO pan is a little deeper before the sump to accommodate the bigger BBO crankshaft and prevent whipping of the oil. If you're building SBO use a BBO pan it has advantages, you gain almost a full extra quart that is almost 6 quarts of oil with filter and ground clearance. Your dip stick will say its over but your fine.

There are still new BBO replacements available. The Canton pan is the only deep sump pan worth buying. Many issues with Moroso and Milidon.

Problem with an original BBO oil pan is there getting harder to find in good condition. Jegs and summit do sell aftermarket stock olds pans but not sure of the quality of them.

Thanks for posting. It's right on time for me, as I'm gathering parts for my 403. I'm assuming since your mentioning it here, that there is no interference with the crossmember?? Now for the dipstick... use a BBO stick, or... There has to be a fix, in order to get a proper reading on the stick.

I got a Toro pan laying around here still I think. If I didn't give it to someone and forgot about doing that. It also has baffle in it.

So im new to the Olds engines.

Will a BB pan fit a Sb or vise versa?

The BBO pan will fit the SBO. I think a SBO pan can fit a BBO but might come awful close to the crank, 3.385" vs a 4.250" stroke. Plus the BBO pan is better and the 455 has enough bottom end issues, so why risk it?
