Kids in the neighborhood decided it would be a great idea to bust out the old cars window. And what a f'ing mess. I have the padded vinyl top and no window replacement person's can do it. What am I suppose to do now? Any Ideas? Its the original Vinyl top and I know it will not roll back without ripping to allow a window replacement. My friend thinks it can be done just by removing the piece across the trunk and sliding it upwards. Not so sure. Ideas are greatly appreciated. I could Kill right now!!

Glass insurance? If the car has comprehensive coverage then technically it was vandalism.

Could file a police report. I've got no tolerance for things like that. Let the parents make restitution, including having a body shop put the glass and a new top on.

Some say it's overkill and why put the kids through it, or the parents, or risk the kids getting a criminal mischief rap and juvenile records... I say why should the innocent car owner have to suffer because of the hooligans?

The car window is going to be glued in with the adhesive. It won't just slide in and out. Not to mention, you need to clean what's left stuck to the glue out.

Construction-wise, if you haven't removed one of those windows before there are plastic strips that cover the edges of the glass, then the vinyl wrapped over it.

Last thing you want is a poor seal that let's a water leak form.

First I would definately file a police report. Hang the little bastards by their Buster Browns. Second, call your insurance company. It can be fixed.

As stated above, I would file a police report. Then I would notify the insurance. Then I'd get the car out of the weather. Then I'd look for someone who knows how to put a landau top on one of these cars. I'd see if they were up to resetting the back glass and if they aren't, then I'd line up a mobile glass tecnician to do the work. I'd probably look for a good used O.E. piece of glass rather than buy an aftermarket replacement piece. I see them available online both heated and not.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to your car. My guess is you will have to put a top on it to replace that window. I hope I'm wrong. Keep us posted on the progress getting it fixed. At least it hasn't been wrecked by some careless idiot plowing into it.

Btw, this is another afterthought.

Sometime I see nos top vinyl from gm for these cars on ebay. You won half the battle if you can get a semi correct color, with a correct cut, ready for a shop to install.

It's probably gonna be a mom and pop type body shop - large places have too much turnover to have the institutional knowledge and remember how to do these. Glass companies... same problem as big body shops.

When I was still living in the city, a kid decided to jump on top of the hood of my mother's van. I watched the kid do it, and I went and got his father. His dad about wrung his neck when I told him. He was going to make him pay for it, but after seeing how pissed off he was, I figured dealing with his parents was punishment enough for him. The van was old and the dent wasn't a big deal. I let it go.

When I moved out to the suburbs, another kid shot out the window in the man door to my garage. I watched him do it, and I went and told his mother. She went off on me about how her kid didn't do it, and I couldn't prove it, she wasn't paying for it and I've been picking on her son, etc, etc.

Now I would've let it go and just put a piece of plexiglass in and called it a day if she had held her son responsible for it. But she didn't, so I called up a window shop and had them put a brand new window in. Then I took the mother and her kid to magisterial court and won, and she had to pay for my new window. They still hate me, not that I really care.

In my opinion (for legal reasons do not follow), I'd beat the piss out of the kid until he confessed where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. Then just a hair more.
Now reality, somebody gotta pay for the damage. If it is 100% known which little sh*t did it, have the cops join you when you talk to the parents. You gotta get a police report & contact your insurance. The kid needs to learn every action has a price & going through life as a total dick won't get him far.
