I personally wouldn't bother with primer. Scuff them, spray the adhesion promoter, then spray color. Then clear. Read and follow the TDS for whatever products you use.

What brand is your paint? I'd find one by the same manufacturer. If you can't, U-Pol, SEM, Transtar are all usually safe bets. Check for compatibility on a piece of scrap before you spray your fillers.

Make sure to get the product infomation sheet (p-sheet) for each product which will give you instructions, pot life, recoat & dry times, compatible products (same brand). etc... Always save them. I have a PPG binder from over 20 years ago with what was current then & what newer updated ones I've picked up over the years.

This is the paint I have. Got it from eBay. Didn't come with any spec sheets or anything just general directions on how to use spray paint an extra nozzle and a spray testing card.

Also to reiterate, it is the exact match of my car, because it is. I sprayed the entire passenger b pillar. Over old cracked Bondo and everything. Can ya tell lol
It of course looks flatter, the bottom half of the car has clear that was done decades ago.

I see the can says basecoat but does it say anything else? Basecoat implies it needs a clear. Obviously its a 1k paint but it would be good to know if it is an enamel, lacquer or urethane. Look at the other numbers on the label. I'm going to bet lacquer or urethane in which case you'll be fine. Enamels are...ehhh.

Definitely spend the $35 or so on the 2k Spraymax clear. It will make a huge difference in the final product over using any other spray can clear.

For adhesion promoter, U-Pol Grip #4 is my go-to. O'Reilly and Autozone are starting to carry some U-Pol stuff but I think it is more consumer grade and I'm not sure if it is any good.

Add in the U-Pol clear in a spray bomb. It's a great choice for small & spot jobs. I use it on all the small stuff.

That upol clear is laquer and tends to crack over time, unless they’ve changed it since 2020. I’ve stopped using it since then.

The jobber I work for just started carrying a line of 2k spray cans that you have more than 24 hours to use them. Guys have been having good luck with the epoxy. We’re supposed to be getting in the clear soon too. This is the brand.

I've been using it for about 20 years & haven't had any cracking issues. Been putting it over urethane & most of it been DBC.
