Performance 307 build!!

What RPM range are you aiming for? I'm thinking the engine could have great potential at high rpms. I don't know the bore/stroke rod ratio etc. so I don't know if the 307 will safely rev high anyway.

I'm just thinking that the smaller ford 302's make tons of power but usually only at high rpm. I helped a friend build a 10 second mustang with a 302, no NOS, no supercharger. However he had it setup to shift at 8400 rpms. My uncle built a camaro with a Chevy 302 that made power to 8,000 rpm's. That car ran a powerglide and 4.88 gears and ran mid 10's also. I'm just saying smaller engines have a different way of making power, they're just not very streetable because of the lack of torque.

What about running a supercharger? You could still run it at streetable rpm's and have tons of torque.

Olds made 180 HP from the 307 with but a different cam, slightly richer secondaries, dual snorkle air cleaner and stiffer valve springs and of course the dual exhaust system. 200 HP should be easily obtainable with a roller "Y" 7 A head motor with some of todays mods. Start with the exhaust and rear end of your Olds. The Y motors used 2.14 rear gears with 3 speed metric trannys and 2.56:1 with overdrive 200R4. A 3.08:1 was a rare option with the overdrive. If you have the overdrive give it at least a set of 3.23 or 3.42 rear gears and have the 442 exhuast installed with either gutted or high flow cat. That alone will put drastically more power to the pavement without even turning a wrench on your 307 assuming it is in top tune to start with. Next apply the same line of thinking that Olds used with the HO 307. Stiffer valve springs, modified Q-jet with richer, quicker opening rate, a 252H comp cam, non computerized distributer and Q-jet to go along with it and don't forget to dial in that distributer with a nice performance re-curve kit and 22 degrees of base timing. If this was an earlier 84 or older 307 you would have the 5A heads and be able to use a performance intake manifold and have over 200 HP. Point being don't concentrate fully on the engine. Sure more power can be made but it won't be drastic. You must get more in and out of the engine and lay down the power more effectively to get a total upgrade with these cars. Also be aware that your not going to get as much power out of the 7A roller motor due to the tiny intake and exhaust ports but more power can be had easily.

I have a 305 with swirl port heads, intake and Weber carb with a 350 trans. From a roll I can mash the gas and get a good amount of power but it doesn't last long. I'm unsure of my HP as I've never had it dyno'ed. My plans are to keep the 305 running long enough to get a decent, streetable 350 together for a swap. Probably not what you wanted to hear but I didn't either :|

How does one find out if a 200R4 has the 3:08:1 gears?

alright. im doing the same thing that you are. and im shooting for low 14's with a 307. its totally possible. and ill prove it lol.
tons of gear, smarts, and alot of head work.

Lets get out here and prove everyone wrong Olds for life PERFORMANCE 307 LIVES!!

I remember when I thought 200 horse was fast...

What a

FYI in the world of performance anything that is arround 1.2-1.5 hp per cube is considered MILD. Anything that is .6 hp per cube is considered a smogger and a waste of time :blam:

No offence meant of course. Just layin down it straight.

well, i dont wanna go crazy, but i wanna prove a point. popular hot rodding covered an article about making 435 hp out of a 307. you have to be VERY smart about the heads. i have 7a heads on the motor now, but i have a set of 5a's for it. i dont want a world beater, but i wanna turn some heads with a "boat anchor" under the hood.

Magazine articles...

I get the sense you wouldnt know the first thing about what it takes to be 'VERY smart' regarding heads.
