We recently were given a 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle 1.8 Turbo that was a bit of a basket case.

It has set covered in a garage for a few years, and has had the front end removed to repair some crash damage. It also has had the dash and center console disassembled. Oh yeah, all the interior plastics are gooey from the rubberized coating on them deteriorating. Basically a hot mess.

So far, I have replaced a crankshaft position sensor to get it running, bought and installed a core support assembly from the junkyard (to replace the missing radiator and condenser), reassembled the dash, and mostly got the pile of parts bolted back onto the car. It does actually move under it's own power, but after it gets warm there is a rattle from the cam chain at idle. This is probably the cam chain tensioner giving out. Not a crazy hard thing to fix, but definately a PITA. It is also overdue for a timing belt and that is not a fun job at all.

This could be a fun daily driver, but I am going to have to put in a lot of work to get it there.

Can’t beat it for free! I’ve always been on the fence on those, as I’ve looked at a few with really good prices, but it always comes back to me that real Beetles have the engine in the back...

Believe it or not, but the electrical is perfect on it right now. It is all the lack of maintenance that has caught up with it. It doesn't help that VAG designs everything to last until right after the warranty period expires, either.
