Im looking for a truck to drive. I just sold my pos dd caddilac. I run thru marketplace and find a 05 silverado 2500 hd wiyh 47000 miles has a rusty bed. He said it was a railroad yard truck. Its only 3500 hes probably gonna take 3k. I carfaxed it. It says it has 42k miles on it. Is there anyway to make sure the engine is a 6.0 original to the truck? Are there telltale signs a swap has been done either another 6.0 or 5.3/4.8? Thanks for any help.

If it has 862 or 706 heads (can be seen by a casting mark on the front of the cylinder head by the valve cover) its a 5.3 or 4.8. If its 317 its a 6.0

Theres no reason it would be replaced with only 50K miles.

I wouldnt worry about the drivetrain. I would worry about the doors, interior, and suspension. Rail yards are not kind places and its a company truck so its going to hit ruts at 40mph with no care in the world. It also is going to get the doors left open, windows rolled down and rained on inside because its a work truck and "not mine" so nobody cares.

If it doesn't knock and there is oil on the dipstick its probably fine. I'd check more if the shocks are leaking, if the tires are worn straight, how much slop in the steering there is, how bad it rattles down the road, if all the heater and AC blend doors work.

A lot of those HD pickups also have an hour meter built into the odometer display. Try cycling through it to see how many hours it has. It could have 50K miles and 5000 hours of idling.

If its one of those service trucks with the inset wheels and the bumpers that have liftable rail wheels so it can drive down a track run away. My bet is its one of those and the rail crew pulled the service bed and rail axles off and sold it at auction. Someone else buys it, changes the wheels and throws a rusty bed on it from the salvage yard to sell it as a low mileage truck.

I gotta agree here. I work for a railroad and the guys that use the trucks are not easy on them. Expect the same condition and treatment you would from a truck used by the employees at a junkyard.

Right on for the help fellas. I went and looked at it. It runs great no smoke or leaks. 80 lb oil pressure. It has 47k miles and 2860 hours. 42k on the title. Its got 317 heads. The tires were worn down but not uneven. The rockers are rotted all out. The bed is completely rotted out around the wheel wells. The crossbraces the bed sits on are rotted. The frame didn't seem that bad just scaley. Its got newer shocks and brake lines. It actually drives pretty good. It dont pull or shake I imagine you might be able to drive it for a year before body panels start fallin off. The bed might have less time. 20200113_130317.jpg
I have no desire to fix the truck at all. So I offered him 2500. He says he's gotta talk to his wife hell let me know. I don't know if its worth it. Well see how it shakes out.

EVERY fluid line under there is suspect; the newish brake lines are a testament. Can you get it through inspection with rust holes? That would be my biggest concern.
